Welcome to VAST 2008 Web Site

Towards Sustainability
Integrated Technological Practices for Human Heritage and Cultural Memory

VAST2008 continues the tradition of excellence in the VAST symposia for technologies in service of cultural heritage. This year’s symposium emphasizes the ephemeral nature of the tangible/ intangible cultural heritage artifacts – archaeological remains, buildings, finds, manuscripts, myths, life histories, songs, stories – and the new virtual heritage artifacts we are producing in order to document, analyze, visualize and share our pasts through digital means.

VAST2008 is the 9th VAST Symposium, promoted by the EUROGRAPHICS Association and the European project EPOCH. It is being organized for the 1st time in Portugal, in Braga, from December 2-5 (VAST2008 with renewed website). Previous events received an average of 150 experts and scholars; the latest 3 were in Brighton, UK (VAST 2007), Nicosia, Cyprus (VAST 2006), and Pisa, Italy (VAST 2005).

VAST2008 joins the Coa Valley Archaeological Park (PAVC) in the 10th anniversary celebration of its Rock Art as World Heritage by UNESCO. After the symposium, the organization provides an 1.5 day field trip to Coa Valley Park (and a Douro Vineyard).
