On the IoT, from A to Z

AbstractAccording to Gartner's hype cycle for emerging technologies (2015), Internet of Things (IoT) innovations are at the peak of inflated expectations that organisations should monitor; and thus researchers in different areas are recommended to be aware of IoT technology and challenges. In this talk, we briefly cover the different IoT technology layers from A to Z (assuming audience from diverse areas, with basic knowledge about technology). In particular, we present the big picture of an IoT architecture, demonstrating the data flow from the hardware device up to the applications. Then, we dig into each IoT layer covering the definitions, existing technologies, challenges, and possible solutions. The covered layers are: hardware devices (sensors and actuators), the network (basically wireless technologies), deployment topologies and routing, semantic models and ontologies, data processing and storage, data security, and finally presentation and application layers. Afterwards, we talk about the IoT interoperability problems and solutions through concisely presenting existing middlewares and standards. Finally, we overview two IoT platforms designed for personal and home use, showing how this technology is becoming user friendly.

About the speakerAli Shoker is a postdoctoral researcher at the High Assurance Software Laboratory HASLab/INESC TEC, and invited lecturer at the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. He holds a Ph.D degree in Informatics and Telecommunications from the University of Toulouse (IRIT/CNRS lab.), France. Ali spent two internships at EPFL (LPD lab.) in Switzerland, in 2010 and 2011, and one year at INSA de Lyon (LIRIS/CNRS Lab) in France, during 2012-13. Ali is currently working on data management in distributed systems, in particular, relaxed consistency models (EC, CRDTs, etc.), and on Fault Tolerance in distributed systems too; he is however interested in any Distributed Systems topic like: fault tolerance (Byzantine, Benign, Rational), scalability, availability, and consistency in any sort of distributed systems (cooperative, P2P, Grid, HPC, Cloud, etc.).
