Intelligent Systems

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is to be understood either as a science, where it is studied the phenomenon of intelligence, or as an engineering branch. As an engineering branch AI is intelligence as computation, where it is simulated the expert reasoning and the cognitive phenomenon that occur in the human mind. However, AI is also search, looking at the way people think, with the objective of modelling this reasonig into computational processes, trying to build a body of algorithmic explanations of the mental processes. That distinguishes AI from others fields. AI puts emphasis on the elaboration of theories and models of intelligence as programs. With this course it is intended to give education in the scientific area of AI. The modules gives to students knowledge at the technological level, algorithms and common problem solving methodologies and techniques, to be used in intelligent software development and analyze, i.e. the unit establishes the basic competence for a profile in Master in Informatics at The University of Minho. The course will have a strong practical component, with an integrated project that will cover different areas as Medicine, The Law, Ambient Intelligence, Collaborative Networks, e-Business and Intelligent Robotics, just to name a few.
