Knowledge Engineering

In the area of Knowledge Engineering we look at knowledge-based systems, in terms of fundamental research and applications. i.e. to knowledge representation and reasoning methods, development of knowledge based systems, the study of relations between these systems and the associated teaching /learning processes. In this area it is made an approach to topics that are coming from constructivist cognitive systems, i.e. from the study of knowledge oriented systems adopting a constructivist approach inspired by the Piaget's work, to the conexionistic models, where knowledge representation is treated in a distributed way. The main objective is to investigate the expressive power of such models and the cognitive processes that may be developed, which take into consideration the non-linear neural functions and the neural plasticity observed in biological structures. On the other hand, it is intended to study advanced subjects in fundamental areas that are in the neighbourhood between knowledge representation models, reasoning forms and symbolic systems, using logic programming, without forgetting the core application areas such as Medicine, The Law and Intelligent Commerce. With this unit, it is intended to introduce a large library of methods and problem solving techniques that have been used as a way of incorporate the methods and techniques just referred to above, and that are also object of attention in scientific research projects, and that refer to a certain application domain, i.e. want to establish the basic competence for granting the Master in Informatics profile at our university.
