Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing

Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing represent a fundamental paradigm change from an era in which the computer was the desktop to an era in which computing and communications are ubiquitous and an integral part of our physical world and daily lives.

This UCE aims to develop advanced competences in the design, implementation and evaluation of computing systems characterised by the strong mobility of their users and ubiquitous presence of computing and communication services.

In order to address the multiple implications of this paradigm change across the various areas of computing, this UCE assumes a multi-disciplinary approach, attempting to address the issues in an integrated way and providing the ground for bridges with other scientific areas of computing.

This multi-disciplinarity makes this UCE very attractive to a diverse range of students, which can find in this course and important complement to other courses in more specific areas.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the general principles of ubiquitous computing and apply them to the design, implementation and operation of computing system.
  • Explain the main communication services for mobile users and evaluate their applicability in various mobility scenarios
  • Explain the main principles of human-computer interaction and their importance in the usability of the system.
  • Identify the main software architectures and select the most appropriate for a specific mobile or ubiquitous computing solution.
  • Plan and implement within a team mobile and ubiquitous computing systems of medium complexity, taking into consideration the multi-disciplinary implications, and analysing and selecting the most adequate approaches and technologies.
  • Conceive and apply an evaluation strategy for a particular mobile or ubiquitous computing system.
