Abstract. Governments attach much attention to the opening and linking of data to serve transparency, innovation, better resources utilization, and related objectives. At the same time, datification produce more and more data (big, linked and potentially open) that can be used for a variety of purposes. This data deluge has resulted in many new applications and services. However, despite the efforts undertaken, the progress in utilizing such data is falling short of its potential and government ambitions. The seminar will introduce the concepts of big, linked, open data, outline how such data is being produced through datafication processes, and present innovative applications and the latest research results in the area. The focus will be on combing varieties of data using platforms that bring together public organizations, businesses and citizens.

About the speaker. Prof.dr.ir. Marijn Janssen holds the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek chair in “ICT and Governance” and is head of the Information and Communication Technology section of the Technology, Policy and Management Faculty of Delft University of Technology. He lectures the courses ‘Design of Innovative ICT-Infrastructures and services', 'Business Processes Management and Technology" at Delft University of Technology. He is teaching the module ‘business process & technology’ at the MBA Business & IT of Nyenrode Business University. He initiated a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in the field of ‘open government’ which attracted over 3500 subscribers.

Marijn Janssen is co-editor-in-chief of Government Information Quarterly (GIQ), associated editor of International Journal of E-business Research (IJEBR), international Journal of E-Government Research (IJEGR), Decision Support Systems (DSS) and on the editorial board of Information Systems Frontiers (ISF), Transforming Government: People, Process & Policy (TGPPP) and Information Polity (IP).

He is co-chair at the E-government open data and datafication minitrack (and in the past of the interoperability infrastructure and e-policy, governance and law track) of the HICSS conference, was the organizing chair of ICEC04, IFIP EGOV2011 and IFIP I3E2015 held in Delft, and is programme chair of the IFIP I3E2016 conference and conference chair of the annual IFIP EGOV conferences series since 2009. He is also track chair of the e-government track at AMCIS and serves on several programme committees of conferences.

He was involved in EU funded projects in the past aimed at developing e-government community (FP7 EGovRTD2020 and FP7 eGovPoliNet project) and in the FP7 ENGAGE project which developed an open data infrastructures, incorporating distributed and diverse public sector information (PSI) resources, capable of supporting scientific collaboration and research, particularly for the Social Science and Humanities (SSH) scientific communities, while also empowering the deployment of open governmental data towards citizen. Currently he is involved in the H2020 OpenGovIntelligence project which aims at the automation of the statistical analysis of open data. He is also involved in the H2020 VRE4EIC (A Europe-wide Interoperable Virtual Research Environment to Empower Multidisciplinary Research Communities and Accelerate Innovation and Collaboration) project which improved information sharing among researchers by taking privacy, security and trust issues into account.

Dr. Janssen acts as the leading Expert for the European Union in the revision of European Interoperability Framework (EIF) related to the opening of data and data sharing.

Marijn Janssen supervised 8 PhDs who completed their thesis successfully and is supervising 7 PhD students. In his career he received 13 awards for best papers at conferences and in journals. He was ranked as one of the leading e-government researchers in a survey in 2009 and 2014 and published over 350 refereed publications.
