CumuloNimbo: A Cloud Scalable SQL Database

10/21/2015

By Prof. Rui Oliveira, HASLab/INESC TEC & University of Minho.

AbstractThis talk presents an overview of the CumuloNimbo platform. CumuloNimbo is a framework for multi-tier applications that provides scalable and fault-tolerant processing of OLTP workloads. The main novelty of CumuloNimbo is that it provides a standard SQL interface and full transactional support without resorting to sharding and no need to know the workload in advance. Scalability is achieved by distributing request execution and transaction control across many compute nodes while data is persisted in a distributed data store. In this paper we present an overview of the platform.

About the speaker. Rui Oliveira is currently an Associate Professor at the Computer Science Department of University of Minho and member of the Administration Board of INESC TEC. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).
His research interests are in reliable distributed systems, in particular with application to distributed database systems and large scale systems. His research has been focused on distributed fault-tolerant agreement protocols and on very large scale data management.
He has published regularly in conferences such as IEEE Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN), IEEE Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems (SRDS), IEEE International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium, IFIP International Conference on Distributed Applications and Interoperable Systems as well as in the IEEE Transactions on Computers. He is a member of IFIP, ACM and IEEE. He has served in the Program Committee for conferences and workshops such as SRDS, Middleware, EDCC, SAC, ICDCS, DOA, DAIS, OPODIS and DEBS. He was PC co-chair of DAIS 2009 and SRDS 2010 and Symposium chair of SRDS 2013 and serves on the steering committees of IEEE SRDS, Middleware and DAIS. He is vice-chair of IFIP WG6.1. Rui participated in and coordinated more than 10 national and european research projects and supervised several Ph.D projects and lectures in Masters and Doctoral programmes (in cooperation with CMU and UT-Austin in the USA) at the University of Minho on Distributed Systems and Dependability topics.
