Access technologies: xDSL, PPP, Cable Modems and DOCSIS, Powerline, Ethernet (IEEE 802.3), Fast Ethernet (IEEE 802.3u), Giga and 10Giga Ethernet, Wireless Lan (802.11x) (overview), Token Ring (IEEE 802.5), Token Bus (IEEE 802.4); Metropolitan and WAN technologies: FDDI (ANMestrado.SI X3T9.5), DQDB (IEEE 802.6), Frame Relay, Assynchrounous Transfer Mode (ATM), Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Generalised MPLS; Physical framing: Digital Hierarchies, SONET, OC-x, PONs

Learning outcomes

  • to explain the main theoretical concepts underpinning the major access and core network technologies;
  • exemplify and discuss the use of such technologies over distinct networking scenarios;
  • to understanding the principles of physical framing.
