The image of a Viking soldier with horned helmet, popularized by Hollywood movies and cartoons, is now seen as a myth by the scientific community. Some researchers say Vikings wore no helmets. Others use fragments to depict a helmet with a smooth, curved surface that could deflect blows. Other features included cheek guards that could be worn folded up (perhaps horn-like) and a gogglelike band of steel that protected the nose, eyes, and upper cheekbones without interfering with breathing or visibility.
