Three New Research Centers

The BA Board of Trustees (BoT) has recently approved establishing three new research centers, namely: the Coptic Studies Center, the Islamic Civilization Studies Center, and the Environmental Studies Center. The Coptic Studies Center aims to spread public awareness about this largely unknown era of Egyptian history, and stress the fact that Coptic heritage is a heritage of all Egyptians. The Islamic Civilization Center focuses on the contributions of Muslim scientists, scholars, researchers and intellectuals in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the Islamic heritage of that era. The Environmental Studies Center focuses on environmental research in the region in the context of climate change and rise of pollution rates. The 3 research centers are a continuation of previous work done at the BA in these domains.

Forthcoming

Immeubles Heikal - Microcosmes Alexandrins Book Launch (29 October 2013)

The BA holds the Book Launch ceremony of Immeubles Heikal - Microcosmes Alexandrins by Dr. Azza Heikal. In this volume, the author has collected narratives by former residents of the Heikal buildings, many of whom are today dispersed across the globe. Their vivid accounts evoke the legendary cosmopolitanism and hospitality of their native city, Alexandria, during the mid-twentieth century. In this monograph, the reader will discover a microcosm in which Egyptians, Greeks, Danes, English, Italians, Syrians, Jews, French, Swiss and Palestinians all lived together in a spirit of harmony and tolerance. Azza Heikal holds a PhD in literature, and has studied in the universities of Alexandria and Sorbonne. She is also the author of Il était une fois une sultane : Chagarat Al-Durr.
