The creation of Guimarães city goes back to times previous to the foundation of the nationality, and it is much more than the simple birth of a city. It precedes and prepares the foundation of Portugal, is the cradle where not only its prince but also the Kingdom would be born.
In Guimarães, the visitor finds in one of the towers of the old wall of the city the registration "Here was born Portugal". This registration refers to the events that took place here and that lead to the foundation of the Portuguese nationality, events that began with the S. Mamede's battle, on June 24 th 1128, and that culminated with the recognition of D. Afonso Henriques as the 1 st king of Portugal.

Gualterianas Festivities
These religious festivities take place on the first weekend of August, and are considered one of the most important of the province of Minho, in which there is a special attention given to the promotion of the economic and cultural activities in the town.
Nicolinas Festivities
These festivities take place in the end of November and beginning of December and are organised by undergraduate students from all the high schools of Guimarães.
