DSpace is a groundbreaking digital institutional repository that captures, stores, indexes, preserves, and redistributes the intellectual output of a university’s research faculty in digital formats.

DSpace official release was in November 2002. A few months later, in April 2003, the Documentation Services of University of Minho began the translation and implementation of the first Portuguese version of DSpace. This initiative gave birth to the RepositóriUM – the institutional repository of the University of Minho, publicly released in November 2003. Since then, many Portuguese speaking institutions have been adopting DSpace in Portugal and Brazil.
