Course Organisation

The Degree Programmes at the University of Minho are organised according to ECTS - European Credit Transfer System, as defined by the Portuguese Legislation Decreto-Lei no. 42/2005 of the 22th February, in order to increase interdisciplinary study and provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition of studies abroad.

Each Credit Unit is equivalent to:

  • Fifteen hours of theoretical classes; or
  • Forty hours of practical classes; or
  • Twenty-two hours of theoretical and practical classes; or
  • Thirty hours of placement or seminar classes.

    The units of credit attributed to each discipline are expressed in multiples of half units. The total number of credits may not be less than one unit.

    Each academic year, students must enrol in disciplines corresponding to a total number of credits not less than 12 units.

    Courses Management

    The management of each course is the joint responsibility of the Course Commission and the Course Director. The coordination of courses groups (those with related interests) is carried out by the respective Course Council.

    The organisation, functioning and competences of the Course Councils and the Course Commissions are defined in their regulations. The structure of these organs requires the participation of elected student and teacher representatives.

    Course Councils:

  • Council of Sciences;
  • Council of Economic and Social Sciences;
  • Council of Education and Psychology;
  • Council of Engineering;
  • Council of Arts and Human Sciences;
  • Council of Child Studies.
