%X <p>Mathematical literacy, broadly understood as the ability to reason in terms of abstract models and the effective use of logical arguments and mathematical calculation, be- came a condition for democratic citizenship. This paper discusses argumentation and proof as two main ingredients in strategies for achieving a higher degree of mathemat- ical fluency in both social and professional life.</p>
