2nd Workshop on Intelligent Robotics

Research in robotics has traditionally emphasized low-level sensing and control tasks, path planning, and actuator design and control. In contrast, several Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers are more concerned with providing real/simulated robots with higher-level cognitive functions that enable them to reason, act and perceive in an autonomous way in dynamic, inaccessible, continuous and non deterministic environments. Combining results from traditional robotics with those from AI and cognitive science will be thus essential for the future of intelligent robotics.

The purpose of the 2nd International Workshop on Intelligent Robotics IROBOT'07 is to bring together researchers, engineers and other professionals interested in the application of AI techniques in real/simulated robotics to discuss current work and future directions.

Topics of Interest

- AI Planning for robotics
- Autonomous vehicles

Scope

Although Robotics is an area of Artificial Intelligence that combines most of the other AI areas in some fashion, it has not been present in EPIA conference Workshops until 2005 (besides the RoboCup Tutorial – The RoboCup International Initiative: AI Meets Robotics to Create RoboSoccer Teams, EPIA 2001 - http://www.fe.up.pt/~lpreis/soccer/tutorial/), contrarily to most of the other International AI conferences. However, in comparison with other countries, Portugal has a very large and successful robotics community. For example, Portugal won three World and six European championships in RoboCup (simulation 2d, simulation 3d, coach, rescue and small-size leagues) and also an important research award. In the last years, Portugal also organized several important Robotic conferences, including: RoboCup 2004: International Competitions and Conferences, 5th IFAC Symposium on Intelligent Autonomous Vehicles, IAV 2004, Int. Conf. on Informatics in Control, Automation and Robotics, ICINCO 2004, ICINCO 2006, among others. Additionally, there are several Portuguese national robotic competitions with increasing success: Portuguese Robotics Open (Festival Nacional de ROBÓTICA) - with 10 different robotic events and an associated scientific meeting, Micro-Mouse/Ciber-Mouse (since 1995 in the University of Aveiro), Robotic Firefighting, etc. IROBOT’07 workshop intends to approach the Portuguese AI and Robotics communities and to bridge the gap between the development of AI methodologies and its application into real robotic platforms. In its first edition (IROBOT’05), the workshop interest in the context of EPIA was confirmed. The workshop was a very busy one with 22 submissions, enabling a rigorous reviewing process and an acceptance rate of only 32% for the main proceedings. Attendance was quite high during the entire workshop. In the second edition, with standards set, the number and quality of the submissions is expected to increase significantly, establishing definitely Robotics as a main area in the context of EPIA.
